Joseph Merrick was heavily deformed and made a reputation in 'freakshows', it was a cruel life.  Eventually he was taken under the wing of a kind doctor who learned from his condition and provided him safe haven.  Although shocking to see, he was a beautiful example of the humanity that lives beneath an exterior we are so often judged by.
